FAHL – DUMBAULD HISTORY
This was re-typed by
Wayne Brown to add clarity to some entries. Although I did not make
great changes, I did make additions or changes here and there – trying
to keep the original text as much as possible. Information in [blue]
was added or edited by me. Often, 2 or more obituaries are included in
the text, and just as often, they differ somewhat in content/context
(from “Roger’s” entries). Where possible and/or necessary, I have added
information that was not included in the original text of the genealogy,
again in [blue]. I have typed in the precise context of what was
written, including punctuation, spelling, and grammar, although I did
make a very few changes for purposes of clarity. Also, I omitted a few
textual inclusions from the original due to their unnecessarily
repetitive nature. It is also said in these texts, as well as many of
my own records, that three of the Fahl children, including William Fahl,
were born in Schuylkill County, PA, and the family moved to Indiana in
1841. However, several of the notations herein state that several
children born in Schuylkill County were born there after 1841 – after
the family had moved to Indiana. Still a puzzle to be worked out…
possibly some typographical errors, but I/we don’t yet know.
George Fahl
was born in Schuylkill County, PA. Mary Ann (Wintermood) Fahl was also
born in Schuylkill County. They were married in that county and moved
to Union Township [in 1841], Huntington
County, IN. Three of their children were born in PA
[including William]. There were a total
of 9 children from this marriage.

-----WILLIAM FAHL-----
“The gentleman for whom this biography is prepared is one of the oldest
residents of Huntington County and one of the most prosperous and highly
respected citizens. For a period of sixty years he has been an eye
witness to the remarkable transformations which have changed the country
from a sparsely populated and poorly developed sections to the present
proud position it enjoys as one of the most progressive and highly
cultured counties in the great commonwealth of Indiana.
William Fahl is a native of Schuylkill County, PA, and
the son of George and Mary Ann (Wintermood) Fahl. Both parents were
born in the Keystone State but of German ancestry. George and
Elizabeth
[sic. Should read Mary Ann? But if it is George and Mary Ann, and
their first born was William, and William is still living, then the next
statement about… ”all living except the first born” is false also. Must
be better researched… also, who was the third child born in PA? From
the dates above, there are only two born before 1841 – when the trip to
IN took place, but of the ones without birth dates, one may certainly
have been born before 1841 and, therefore, in PA. ] Fahl reared a family
of six sons and three daughters, all living at the present time with the
exception of the first born.
William’s birth occurred on 6-29-1831, and at the age of
10 he was brought by his parents to Huntington County, IN, the family
making the long journey, requiring five weeks, to the new home in a
two-horse wagon, encountering many hardships on the way. On reaching
his destination, the father purchased a quarter section of land in what
is now Union Township, paying for the same four-hundred and fifty
dollars.
The money brought with them, six-hundred dollars, was in
silver, tied up in little bags and locked in a chest in the bottom of
the wagon. The land cost them three dollars per acre, and as it
required about all the money they had to pay for same, they were
compelled to sell one horse to obtain enough to live on until a crop
could be raised.
The elder Mr. Fahl was taken sick about this time, and
the work and management rested on the wife and the children in order to
make a living. The mother helped the boys cut down trees, roll logs,
and clear the ground. There was a cabin but with one room, a puncheon
floor, and a clap-board roof weighted down with poles. The floor had a
large crack in it, and it was no uncommon sight to see snakes crawling
through the crevices and over the floor. The family lived in this
one-room log cabin for ten years, when a new house was built. They had
no land cleared to begin on, and as one of the remaining horses died,
two of the boys, William and a younger brother, had to plow with one
horse; one boy would ride the horse while the other held the plow,
changing the work when becoming tired. The plow was one of single
shovel style, nothing like what we have now, and they had to plow the
field both ways to obtain loose dirt enough to cover the seed.
They had great trouble with crops on account of wild
animals. The deer would pasture on the wheat all winter and in the
summer, before the harvest, would run into the wheat fields and lie down
to keep off the flies. The wild turkeys would eat the buckwheat, and
raccoons and squirrels would go after the corn.
The first winter, 1842, was an unusually cold and severe
one; deep snow lay on the ground until the first week in April. Wild
animals in large number froze or starved to death. The deer would cut
through the crust of snow and stick fast with bleeding legs, and were
easy prey to the wolves, who were much lighter of weight and could run
on top of the crust. The wolves were plentiful and troublesome, and it
and it was no uncommon sight to see them around the house or hear their
dismal howling at night in the woods. Here amid the stirring scenes of
pioneer live, the youthful years of William were passed, and his early
experience consisted of vigorous toil varied by frequent hunts in the
surrounding forests which were then infected with wild animals of
various kinds. Deer were so numerous as to be of no rarity as an
article of diet, while wild turkeys, partridges, squirrels, and raccoons
were hardly deemed worth the time to shoot them.
Later young Fahl added considerably to his earnings by
selling certain furs from animals for which there was quite a demand;
that of a mink bringing five dollars, while coonskins sold for a dollar
each. He states that he killed, all told, over forty deer in the
vicinity of his father’s place, and frequently, for the mere sport,
spent days in the chase and seldom if ever returned empty handed.
Mr. Fahl’s earliest recollection of the present thriving
county seat is that of a scattering village in the woods, consisting
principally of log cabin and board houses, while four stores supplied
the spare settlers with such accommodations as they needed. The elder
Fahl was a success[ful] man, and by judicious investments became the
owner of a large amount of real estate, as the country became settled
and developed, increased greatly in value. Before his death, which
occurred at the age of seventy-two, he was able to provide each of his
children with an eighty-acre farm and otherwise assist them in getting a
good start in life.
William remained with his father on the farm until 1858,
assisting with the work and attending school in the proverbial log
cabin. In that year he set up a domestic establishment of his own,
choosing for his partner Miss Elizabeth Dumbauld, who for a period of
over forty years has proved a noble, self-denying wife, and in every
respect a help-mate, to whom is due much of the success which has since
come to their home.
Immediately after his marriage Mr. Fahl moved to an
eighty-acre farm near the Little River, upon which a small but
comfortable log house had been previously erected for the reception of
his bride. He lived and labored five years, clearing and fitting for
cultivation during that time thirty-three acres. He then moved to
another place in Union Township, which he still owns, and after adding a
number of valuable improvements and making it his home until 1887,
changed his residence to where he is now living.
Mr. Fahl is now one of the leading farmers of this
township and county, and also ranks with the first as a breeder and
raiser of fine livestock. His beautiful place, only two and one-half
miles from the city of Huntington, contains all of the valuable
improvements to be found on first-class farms, and everything betokens
the presence of a proprietor fully in keeping with the times in all
matters relating to the ancient and honorable calling of agriculture.
As a man and citizen, none occupy a more enviable standing in the
community. Every movement of public enterprise or private benevolence
finds him a ready, willing assistant, and his irreproachable life has
long been a stimulus to young men with destinies yet to be achieved.
His personal habits are certainly worthy of mention, never having used
tobacco in any form nor polluted his body with intoxicants of any kind
whatsoever.
In politics Mr. Fahl is a Democrat and while using all honorable means
to promote the interest of the party, he has never aspired to public
place nor sought the emoluments of office. His daily life is the
outgrowth of correct principles and strong convictions of right, and his
good name is untinged by the slightest charge of anything savoring of
disrepute.
To Mr. and Mrs. Fahl have been born six children, of who
the following are living: George S.; Sarah, wife of John Renbarger; and
Savilla, now Mrs. Albert Frech.
William Fahl has always be a hard working, active
farmer, and has performed feats in felling timber and cutting wood that
few of our young men of the present day could possibly do. As a young
man, the winters were employed in clearing land and the summers in
tilling the soil. One winter, when he was forty-two years of age, he
cut and put up five cords of wood in one day, the timber being hickory,
oak, and water ash. At the age of twenty-five he cut and put up in a
little over three hours three cords of wood. This was exceptionally
fine, straight ash, and split nicely, and partly accounts for speed with
which the labor was accomplished.
In religion, Mr. Fahl is a Baptist, and believes in
applying the teachings of the Bible in every way possible; and
especially to harmonize our daily life with its precepts and teachings.
It is only by this constant practice and watchfulness over ourselves
that we can enjoy that mansion in the skies prepared by the Master;
where joy reigneth forever, and where real men, not as he is but as God
intended him to be, can only be found.”
George Samuel Fahl, was the son of William and Elizabeth
(Dumbauld) Fahl. He was born in Union Township, Huntington County, IN,
on June 29, 1860. George married Louisiana Virginia Frech of Huntington
County, IN.
George S. and Louisiana married on April 18, 1882 in
Huntington, Huntington County, IN. There were ten
[sic] children from this marriage.
[There were actually 12 children, and why it says 10, I have no idea,

12, 1916 in Huntington; his wife Louisiana Virginia died August 21, 1911
in Huntington, Huntington County, IN. They were the parents of twelve
children [this time, the writer had it
correct…].

“Henry Fahl. A career of exceptional enterprise and
public spirited relationship with the community has been that of Henry
Fahl, who is a native son of Huntington County, belongs to a family
which was established here in pioneer times, and is the owner and
proprietor of the old Fahl homestead, which under his management has
been increased to two-hundred acres, situated three miles east of
Huntington on the Union Center Gravel Road. Mr. Fahl’s prosperity is
almost entirely due to his individual efforts, and what he has made for
himself.
Henry Fahl was born on the old farm in Union Township,
July 23, 1949 [sic, read 1849], a son of
George and Mary Fahl. The Fahl family came originally from Germany, and
George Fahl was born in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, of which his
wife was likewise a native. They were married in that county, and
settled in Huntington County, Indiana, in 1841. Their location in Union
Township entitled the to distinction as pioneers, and they bore their
full share of the hardships and responsibilities connected with living
in that vicinity at that time. George Fahl died on the old farm in
1873, and his widow survived until July, 1893. They were the parents of
nine children, and seven living at the present writing are: Edward, of
Cass County; William of Huntington City; Dan of Markle; John of Miami
County; Susan and Mary, both residents in the city of Huntington.
Henry Fahl was reared on the old farm, was educated in
the district schools, and from his boyhood experience as a farmer, was
naturally introduced to the career in which he has made a substantial
success. Mr. Fahl has never taken upon himself the responsibility of
family life, and has done much for other members of the family. He has
long been an active worker in the Reformed Church, having served as an
elder for fifteen years. His politics is democratic, but he has never
aspired to public honors, and has never held any office of importance.”
